Fairy Tail

With Fairy Tail just a couple of weeks away until launch, we’ve learned more about how the Switch version is shaping up. Developer Gust informed Nintendo Everything that the game runs at 30 frames per second. You’ll get a 1080p resolution when docked and 720p portable mode. Gust didn’t indicate that there will be any fluctuations, but we’ll undoubtedly have the final verdict upon release.

Outside of discussing performance, we were told that the team “optimized interactions for the background and effects for the Switch version”. However, since the game was always planned as a multiplatform title, Gust “worked hard to ensure that the quality was uniform across all platforms.”

We’ll have more from our interview with Gust regarding Fairy Tail soon.

In this week’s issue of Famitsu, Smash Bros. Ultimate director Masahiro Sakurai spoke in-depth about adding Min Min to the game as part of his latest column. He also briefly commented on how he has been continuously working on the series since Smash Bros. Wii U/3DS, and after the next round of DLC fighters are finished, things will finally be over.

Here’s our full translation of the column:

Nintendo Switch

Continuing the trend in recent months, Switch was again the best-selling system in the United States last month. Nintendo’s console outperformed all other platforms in both unit and dollar sales.

Despite the strong sales of Switch, overall gaming hardware sales were down in June year-over-year to $191 million. It’s the first month of year-on-year declines since February. However, year-to-date spending is up 25 percent compared to a year ago to $1.6 billion.

Paper Mario: The Origami King

As part of a new interview with VGC, Paper Mario: The Origami King producer Kensuke Tanabe and assistant producer Risa Tabata have weighed in on fans’ reception to the series starting with Sticker Star.

Tabata said that the team avoids using the same idea twice since they want to “create new gameplay” and offer players “positive surprises”. Tanabe noted that he does check out some fan opinions after a game launches, but with cases in which he “can’t address those opinions exactly as fans want”, he tries to pursue “new, fun ideas.” Tanabe ultimately said “it’s difficult to satisfy certain fans with the adventure game direction if they think of Paper Mario games as simply being RPGs.”

Here’s the full roundup:

Paper Mario: The Origami King

Paper Mario: The Origami King producer Kensuke Tanabe has shared some interesting insight into how he’s approached the series in recent years.

Speaking with VCG, Kensuke was asked about how he ensures that the story of Paper Mario appeals to a broad audience. He revealed that Super Paper Mario had an “elaborate story” which “led the game away from the Mario universe”, so he’s avoided “using stories that are too complicated” since Paper Mario: Sticker Star.
