In his previous Famitsu column, Super Smash Bros. director Masahiro Sakurai wrote about the passing of Satoru Iwata. This week’s issue of the magazine has another piece from Sakurai in which he touches on Iwata’s funeral.

Sakurai wrote:

“Normally at a place like this, one’s eyes go to the photo [of the deceased]. The smiling face of Mr. Iwata surrounded by flowers was a very nice picture.”

“Inside there was the still body of Mr. Iwata. He was probably dressed in traditional white funeral garb, his glasses removed, and his nose stuffed [with cotton]. And today, his body was going to be burned and reduced to nothing. Mr. Iwata would no longer exist in this world.”

MCV reports that the Nintendo UK online store will launch a service called “N-Box” soon, which will be a product similar to the popular “Loot Crate”.

According to MCV, those boxes will contain “toys, clothes and other merchandise inspired by and branded with Nintendo icons such as Mario, Zelda and Pokémon.” You will supposedly be able to buy boxes individually or subscribe for either three, six or 12 months and receive a box each month.

Again, this has not yet been officially confirmed by Nintendo, although MCV are a fairly reputable outlet.

Nintendo reported its first quarter results of the fiscal 2016 year yesterday. Bloomberg reveals that, during this period (April 1 through June 30), the company sold another 4.2 million amiibo. Total sales of the figures are now up to 14.7 million since last year’s launch.

This week’s issue of Famitsu has a first look at Monster Strike on 3DS. There are debut screenshots of the game as well as a few details.

Famitsu reports that the 3DS version of Monster Strike features the same story and characters as the anime adaptation. Players will be able to explore a 3D field and complete quests. It’s an RPG with a strong adventure element. Just like in the anime, the main character uses a smartphone.

Famitsu might be sharing more details about Monster Strike in its next issue. However, that information could be exclusively about the anime. We’ll see!

All things considered, last week’s sale of the Palutena amiibo on Amazon’s website went quite well. The figure’s availability lasted about an hour, so many consumers were able to get an order in.

There may be similar luck when Dark Pit goes on sale at Best Buy this Friday. We’re hearing that many stores in the United States will have roughly 50 units on hand, with some locations getting as many as 80. The lowest number seems to be at around 15 currently, but on the whole, Dark Pit should be relatively well-stocked.

We’ve been posting bits and pieces from Nintendo’s latest financial results throughout the day, but we have one final excerpt to share. The company’s report includes some comments about its activities and sales during the last quarter, which we thought was worth sharing.

Here’s the full excerpt:

During the three months ended June 30, 2015, for Nintendo 3DS, New Nintendo 3DS and New Nintendo 3DS XL, which were launched during the previous fiscal year as the newest members of the Nintendo 3DS family, continue to expand their sales, and the global sales of the Nintendo 3DS hardware reached 1.01 million units. As for the Nintendo 3DS software, Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright/Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest, which were released in June for Japan, got off to a good start, while titles such as GIRLS MODE 3 Kirakira?Kode (translation of Japanese title) and Rhythm Tengoku (temp.) gained popularity among female consumers in Japan. In the overseas markets, with the contribution from the release of Puzzle & Dragons Z + Puzzle & Dragons Super Mario Bros. Edition, which is the overseas version of popular games in Japan, the global sales of the Nintendo 3DS software reached 7.92 million units.

With respect to Wii U, Splatoon, which was released globally in May and gathered attention, marked 1.62 million units in sales and contributed to vitalizing the Wii U platform. The worldwide sales of the Wii U hardware and software were 0.47 million and 4.55 million units respectively.

Back in the day, Rare had plans to create a follow-up to Perfect Dark. Velvet Dark would have acted as a “sister” game to the N64 title, according to former staffer Gregg Mayles.

Mayles shared a photo of Velvet Dark’s design document on Twitter earlier today:

Mayles indicated that Velvet Dark would have been an N64 title, but there’s some debate about that. This is a very interesting piece of gaming history in any case!

Update: Here’s the official announcement:

REDMOND, Wash.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Notice something different about Miiverse today? That’s because the free family-friendly service that lets players communicate with other Nintendo players around the world just got a redesign. The makeover is not only visual – the update comes with new features that make sharing tips, drawings and comments about Wii U or Nintendo 3DS games more enjoyable than ever.

The new features included in the redesign include the following:

Screen Shot Album – Saving and organizing screen shots that people take in games are made easier with the new Screen Shot Album. The private album can only be viewed by the player and can hold up to 100 screen shots from a variety of games. The images can even be neatly sorted by game name for easy searching.

Play Journal – With the Play Journal, players can record their unique game experiences by writing journal entries about games as they play them. Creating a journal entry is as easy as opening Miiverse while playing a compatible game, and each entry will include a screen shot that shows exactly what was happening in the game when the player pressed the HOME button. The new Play Journal feature replaces the ability for users to post directly to their own activity feeds.

New Look – In the main community for each Wii U and Nintendo 3DS game, posts will be categorized in three easy-to-browse sections:

Play Journal Entries – All Play Journal entries from players about a specific game will be located here. By viewing the displayed screen shots, players can quickly find other players who are in the same section of the game, making it easy to find relevant tips, comments and experiences.

Drawings – Miiverse is full of incredible drawings from fans. This community section will display artwork other players have created about the game, in order of popularity.

Discussions – If players want to ask questions or start conversations about a game, this is the perfect place to do it. The inclusion of tags in these discussions makes it easier for players to find what they are looking for.

Miiverse can be accessed on the Wii U or Nintendo 3DS systems, as well as via Web browsers. For more information about Miiverse, visit https://miiverse.nintendo.net/.

Nintendo said that the new version of Miiverse would be going live today, and those changes have now been put into effect. You can check out the updates to the social network through your browser here. It’s up and running on Wii U and 3DS as well.
