The Wii brought us two outstanding Super Mario Galaxy games. Nintendo could have chosen to continue the series on Wii U, but decided to bring along something that is more reminiscent of Super Mario 3D Land than anything else.
Producer Yoshiaki Koizumi and director Koichi Hayashida explained to IGN that it came down to the idea of Super Mario 3D World’s concentration in its simultaneous 4-player local multiplayer. While making Super Mario 3D Land, the team thought that adding multiplayer would be fantastic, but this element wasn’t included in the final product. The team thought that it could leverage the Wii U’s power to bring its multiplayer ideas to light.
In Super Mario 3D World, fans can expect familiar elements from classic games, such as Princess Peach’s floating ability from Super Mario Bros. 2 and the more far-out level design ideas and collectible green stars from Galaxy.
Since Princess Peach is playable in Super Mario 3D World, she can’t be kidnapped. Nintendo won’t say who the victim is this time, so we’ll have to keep our eyes peeled for further details.
Arzest is the developer behind Yoshi’s new Island. The company worked on Wii Play: Motion, the StreetPass Mii Plaza, and Level 5’s Time Travelers.
Arzest rose from the ashes of the now-defunct Artoon, who made Yoshi’s Island for DS. Former SEGA staffers are also at the studio.
Austin filmed this one for us at the Wii U Software Showcase earlier today. We’ll have a bunch more videos coming on our new YouTube channel later today, so you’ll want to subscribe!
Is Call of Duty: Ghosts coming to Wii U? That’s the million dollar question. Despite having confirmed Ghosts for practically every major gaming platform, Activision continues to keep quiet about the possibility of a Wii U version.
But while hope may seem dim, there does appear to be a small chance of Call of Duty: Ghosts releasing on Wii U. While speaking about the console in a Eurogamer interview, Infinity Ward executive producer Mark Rubin said: “Stay tuned.” Make of that what you will.
