The SD (Super Deformed) Gundam spinoff franchise has never achieved the same renown as its parent franchise outside of Japan – where at one point it actually eclipsed the popularity of the main franchise in terms of sales for a brief time – but has nonetheless managed to establish itself as a presence in its own right over the years, and has spawned several video games. SD Gundam Battle Alliance marks the third SD Gundam title to release on the Switch, but the first to release on the console in the west. Was it worth the wait?

81monkeys is currently hosting what has already become a hugely successful Kickstarter campaign for its upcoming project World of Anterra. The game, an open world RPG that’s been described as a take on The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim with pixel art, is already confirmed for Switch.

World of Anterra will offer “an endlessly explorable open world, deep progression systems, fast paced combat, and rich lore, all wrapped in a satisfying and accessible interface.” Players can explore a huge world with oceans, continents, regions, castles and towns, mountains, caves, and dungeons. NPCs, which have conversational dialogue, are an important part of the game as well and they live their lives following daily routines and respond dynamically to events in the world and the player. That’s on top of a main story and quests that follow non-linear, divergent paths. We can’t also forget about the party-based combat that’s “designed to be fun no matter how many hours you put in, with streamlined UI and engaging feedback.”
