GDC 2021 survey covers Switch developer interest, project plans, revenue earned

The annual “State of the Game Industry” GDC report was published this week, and it provides the latest insight into developers and their approach to Switch.
Overall responses are comparable to 2020. For instance, 38 percent of developers polled said they’re interested in Switch – whereas that figure was 37 percent last year. 17 percent of respondents said their current project is planned for the console – which hasn’t changed at all.

Over the past few years, Nintendo has started to stress the importance of its IPs beyond just video games. That’s what’s led to things like Super Nintendo World and the upcoming animated movie based on Mario.
The good news is that if you only care about games, Nintendo has looked to ensure that development resources aren’t impacted. President Shuntaro Furukawa told Fast Company:

Nintendo president suggests the company could pursue animation beyond the Mario movie

Despite Nintendo’s wide variety of franchises, the company hasn’t done much with movies. There was the infamous 1993 Super Mario Bros. film, but that’s pretty much it.
Although it’s taken a few decades, Nintendo is finally experimenting with movies once again. An animated Mario film will debut in 2022 thanks to a collaboration with Illumination.

NEO: The World Ends with You devs on why it’s taken so long for a sequel

The World Ends with You first debuted on DS way back in 2007 (2008 in the west). Since then, Square Enix hasn’t done much with the IP. We’ve seen ports and things like character cameos in Kingdom Hearts, but there hasn’t been a new game – until now.
NEO: The World Ends with You, the next entry in the series, will finally release this summer. Producer Tomohiko Hirano spoke about the long wait for a new entry, telling IGN:
Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom – The Prince’s Edition Switch rating surfaces

The first Ni no Kuni made it to Switch in 2019. Its sequel, Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom, could now be on the way as well.
Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom was rated for Nintendo’s console today by the ESRB. It’s “The Prince’s Edition”, which suggests that the season pass DLC will be included.

SpongeBob: Krusty Cook-Off gets surprise release on Switch

Despite not being announced previously, SpongeBob: Krusty Cook-Off has just landed on Switch. Titling Point first launched the game on mobile, and while it’s largely the same on Nintendo’s console, the developer says it’s been “re-designed” and features four new power-ups.
