Update: We now have further clarification on the multiplayer system (thanks Dan). NEX is about twenty years old, though Nintendo itself has been using it for about ten years. The tech, which was created by Quazal, was called Rendez-Vous. Ubisoft bought them out in 2010, and Nintendo then licensed it and renamed it “NEX” soon after.

Original: Since the Wii U and 3DS days, Nintendo has been using something called “NEX” for its multiplayer server system. Almost all games have been tied to it for online functionality. Now though, the company is looking to make a major change.

We’re hearing reports that Nintendo is shifting from NEX to a different system, “NPLN”. Monster Hunter Rise is apparently the first very title to make use of it in public. According to Twitter user thomasnet_mc, NPLN is in a preview phase at the moment, and the Monster Hunter demo allowed Nintendo to see how it performed under load.

Habroxia 2 is slated for February 3 on the Switch eShop. Head on over here for more information and a trailer.

Pokemon Sword/Shield

As revealed today by Nintendo’s financial results, Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield have sold over 20 million units. In doing so, they’ve become the first entries since Pokemon Gold and Pokemon Silver to reach that mark. Sword and Shield have currently sold 23.73 million copies.

Sword and Shield should eventually overtake Gold and Silver as the second best-selling Pokemon games of all time. Red/Blue/Green would be more difficult to surpass as those titles have collectively sold 31.38 million copies.

Here’s a look at the Pokemon series sales for all mainline titles:

Eldest Souls

When Eldest Souls was announced last year, the boss-rush action game was planned for a summer release. That didn’t happen in the end, though we now have a proper status update. United Label and Fallen Flag Studio have now confirmed a new Q2 2021 release window.

Here’s the latest on Eldest Souls:

Nintendo has announced a new partnership with Burger King in the United States.

Those in the U.S. will also have a chance to win a Switch Prize Pack by purchasing a Super Mario Meal on the BK Mobile App or online at BK.com between February 8 and February 22.

Hindsight 20/20: Wrath of the Raakshasa

It’s been almost two years since we first heard about Hindsight 20/20: Wrath of the Raakshasa, the single-player action RPG with morality-based decisions from the BioWare, ArenaNet, and Sucker Punch veterans at Triple-I Games. The studio finally provided an update today with confirmation that the project is now slated for Q2 2021.
