Wii

Way back in August 2010, Nintendo filed a patent for an illumination system, which would seem to work with Wii in some fashion. The item was just published for viewing in the US database today.

Here’s an interesting abstract included with the filing:

An illumination system includes an information processing device capable of communicating with a server via a network and an illumination device capable of receiving a signal from the information processing device. The information processing device includes a reception portion and a lighting control portion. The reception portion receives instruction data from the server, and the instruction data indicates an instruction to cause the illumination device to emit light in accordance with a television broadcast image and/or audio. The lighting control portion outputs a control signal to the illumination device, and the control signal controls lighting by the illumination device based on the received instruction data. The illumination device sheds visible light in accordance with the control signal.

For what it’s worth, the original patent contained drawings in which the Wii is shown. It doesn’t seem like it’d be too tough to bring the tech over to Wii U, though whether Nintendo still has interest in the idea is unknown.

Wii U accounted for a tiny portion of Ubisoft’s Q3 sales. How small are we talking about? 2 percent small.

Nintendo Life has the breakdown:

Q3 2013/2014

Wii U delivered 2% of sales — €10.4 million / £8.7 million / $14.2 million out of a total €520 million / £433 million / $710 million

First nine months of 2013/2014

Wii U delivered 4% of sales — €32.5 million / £27.1 million / $44.4 million out of a total €813 million / £677 million / $1110 million

Wii actually performed quite a bit better for Ubisoft, with last-gen’s console accounting for 11 percent of the publisher’s sales. Here’s the full rundown of shares for other platforms:

PlayStation 3 — 28%
Xbox 360 — 27%
PlayStation 4 — 12%
Wii — 11%
PC — 10%
Xbox One — 9%

At the end of the day, these results shouldn’t be too surprising given the installed bases of Wii U and Wii. Ubisoft also continues to produce Just Dance titles for Wii, which still seems to be a success on Nintendo’s last-gen console.

Skylanders_Franchise_Infographic_Final_MedRes

With Activision having recently confirmed that the Skylanders franchise has collected $2 billion in franchise revenue, the company has now released an infographic covering the series’ history and sales. You can find it above.

We’ve got some financial news for you today, this time from the Disney corner of the market: Disney Interactive’s Disney Infinity game– the Skylanders-inspired toy-based adventure sandbox– is raking in a ton of money, taking company profits from about $9 million at this time last year to $55 million in the last three months of 2013. Here are the full details:

– Disney games division brought in $403 million in revenue
– 38% increase in sales year-over-year
Disney Infinity is the primary driver of this
– Profits are up by $46 million over this time last year
– $9 million in profit in FY3/2013 vs. $55 million in profit in FY3/2014.

Unsurprisingly, Activision intends to publish a new Skylanders game this year. What’s interesting though is that Toys for Bob has returned as the project’s primary developer.

Toys for Bob worked on Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure and Skylanders Giants, but wasn’t too involved with 2013’s Skylanders Swap Force. Vicarious Visions was put in charge of last year’s title, with Beenox handling the Wii version.

Since Skylanders made its debut, the series has grossed over $2 billion worldwide for Activision. That figure is as of December 31 of last year. According to Activision, roughly 175 million Skylanders toys have also been sold.

This week’s GameStop ad has gone live. It’s mostly quiet in the Nintendo scene, but you can save a bit on Skylanders-related products.
