Nintendo Switch

Nintendo will not be releasing any new hardware this year. That’s according to Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa, who shared the news during a financial results briefing just moments ago.

Switch Lite released last September. But rumors have persisted that another Switch model could be on the way, which would potentially provide some sort of boost in power. Furukawa’s comments suggest that we won’t be seeing that until 2021 at the earliest – if at all.

Furukawa said during the briefing:

Nintendo’s financial results briefing is just now getting underway. Analyst David Gibson is in attendance per usual, and is sharing information from the event. We’ll update this post with all of the tidbits as they come in below.

Luigi’s Mansion 3 is getting DLC, but probably not in the way most would have expected. Two multiplayer parts are planned – the first by the end of April and the second by the end of July. This is somewhat surprising, as Luigi’s Mansion 3 is mainly looked upon fondly for its single-player experience.

In an interview with Kotaku, a few developrers weighed in on why Luigi’s Mansion 3 won’t be seeing any single-player DLC. Creative director Bryce Holliday explained:

EA has continued to show interest in Switch, though still remains non-committal to the platform. Speaking during a financial results call today, COO Blake Jorgensen said the company is “very pleased” with Switch’s performance up to this point. However, Jorgensen pointed out that third-parties need to stack up against Nintendo’s own games, which have been the top-sellers “by a long shot”.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate just wrapped its first Fighters Pass. Undoubtedly, one of the highlights was the inclusion of Banjo-Kazooie. Nintendo ended up working with Microsoft and Rare, which wasn’t always the likeliest collaboration.

In an interview with GamesIndustry, Rare head Craig Duncan spoke about how Banjo-Kazooie ended up in the game. Duncan told the site:

The coronavirus outbreak has been ongoing for the past month. It’s a serious issue as the virus has already taken many lives. People all over the world have been affected, but it’s been particularly problematic in China – where it originated from.

Health stands as the most significant aspect of this situation, though it also seems that Nintendo has been affected. Global president Shuntaro Furukawa said during a financial results briefing today that Switch production in China is seeing some impact from the coronavirus epidemic.

Furukawa did not elaborate further, so it’s unclear if future Switch shipments will be delayed.
