Blade Strangers

Nicalis has determined a western release date for its crossover fighting game Blade Strangers. It’s due out on August 28, the company announced today.

Blade Strangers features characters from a number of games, including Cave Story+, The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+, Code of Princess EX, Umihara Kawase, Shovel Knight, and Azure Striker Gunvolt. You can also expect a plethora of modes such as Story Mode, Challenge Mode, online support, and much more.

Switch offers two completely different play styles. You can choose to dock it like a home console, or take the gaming experience anywhere with portable play.

Interestingly, it seems the two are being used at a similar rate. Nintendo senior VP for sales and marketing Doug Bowser told Ars that the split between the two modes is “about even – about 50 percent in the dock and 50 percent away from the dock.” Undocked includes tabletop play as well as fully handheld play. Bowser added that Nintendo doesn’t keep track of which “undocked” mode a player is using.

During the Wii era, one of the most successful third-party releases at the time was Carnival Games. It turned out to be a million seller and also spawned a pair of sequels. Over 9.5 million copies have been sold across all Carnival Games titles.

The same franchise is making a return on Switch later this year, 2K announced today. Simply titled Carnival Games, the latest entry has been built from the ground up for Nintendo’s console and “can be played alone or with up to four players simultaneously, leveraging the unique accessibility of the console’s Joy-Con controllers.” 20 games will be included.

Yo-kai Watch Busters is finally coming west as Yo-kai Watch Blasters, Nintendo has announced. Both versions – Red Cat Corps and White Dog Squad – will be available on September 7. And unlike past entries in the series, Yo-kai Watch Blasters will launch simultaneously in North America and Europe.

We have the following announcement from Nintendo:

Major management changes aren’t only happening at NCL, but at NoE today as well. As was previously announced, Satoru Shibata is retiring from his role as president of Nintendo of Europe today to join the company’s HQ back in Japan as part of its Board of Directors. Today, Shibata’s successors were finally announced.

Nintendo of Europe’s new president and COO is Stephan Bole. Between 2001 and 2015, Bole served as the managing director of Nintendo of France. He also was the senior managing director of corporate strategy (2009 – 2015) and senior managing director European subsidiaries and affiliates (2015 – 2018) for Nintendo of Europe.

Meanwhile, Koji Miyake is Nintendo of Europe’s new CEO. He previously served as the general manager of the human resources department at Nintendo in Japan. Both of them will be supported by new CFO Luciano Pereña (previously Nintendo of Spain) and CMO Laurent Fischer.

Stephan Bole had the following to say about Shibata’s departure and the new management structure:

“To say that Mr Shibata’s contributions have been instrumental to Nintendo’s European operations is an understatement. His efforts over the past 18 years have helped to bring Nintendo products to generations of players across Europe – and beyond. While he will be missed by many, I have full confidence that with our new structure we’ll be able to continue our mission of putting smiles on people’s faces through our unique gaming experiences.”
