REDMOND, Wash., Dec. 15, 2015 – In the final video presentation dedicated to the Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U games, creator Masahiro Sakurai provided many details about previously announced character Cloud from FINAL FANTASY VII, as well as introduced two new playable fighters to the franchise: Corrin from upcoming Nintendo 3DS game Fire Emblem Fates, and Bayonetta from the critically acclaimed Bayonetta games. Bayonetta was the overall top pick in the recent Fighter Ballot, which asked fans to nominate characters that they would love to see added to the Super Smash Bros. series. Bayonetta was the No. 1 pick in Europe and in the top five in North America. When factoring in the amount of votes, Bayonetta was the clear worldwide choice.

In addition to detailed information about the new characters, Sakurai also revealed two new stages coming to both Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U as downloadable content. Midgar – a familiar location for fans of FINAL FANTASY VII – will join the series as Cloud’s stage, while Bayonetta will feel right at home in the Umbra Clock Tower stage. New Mii Fighter outfits will also be added to the game, highlighted by a full costume inspired by Geno from the Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars game for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System.

Corrin wasn’t the only new fighter announced for Smash Bros. Wii U/3DS today. As revealed in a new trailer, Bayonetta is joining the battle.

Bayonetta was actually the number-one requested fighter in the Fighter Ballot worldwide “among realizable characters”. She was the top pick in Europe, and also in the top five in North America.

Here are some details from our live blog:

Her controls will feel familiar to that of the original game
A combo fighter, slow to start but high damage potential
Each special move strikes multiple times
“Bullet Arts” – After an attack, press and hold for continuous gunfire
Gunfire doesn’t cause hitstop, enemies can keep attacking
“Wicked Weaves” summons limbs for all her A smash attacks
“Witch Time” is a counter that slows the opponent down and allows you to punish. Doesn’t slow down the whole game, just opponent
Slowdown time is affected by overall opponent %
When triggered late, “Bat Within” is activated instead which reduces damage done by opponent
“Bullet Climax” is standard B special, fires her guns. Can press and hold the button to charge up
“Heel Slide” is Side + B when used on the ground, can combo out of it. In the air the move is “AfterBurner Kick” and can be followed up with a second kick

Umbra Clock Tower is also coming to Smash Bros. as a new stage. It recreates the opening scene of Bayonetta as the battle progresses. Bayonetta, Jeanne, Cereza, and Rodin trophies will be available to those who purchase the DLC on Wii U.

Nintendo started off today’s Smash Bros. Wii U/3DS presentation by revealing a new character, Corrin, as a playable fighter. This is the main character from Fire Emblem Fates. Male and female versions are both offered.

Dragon Fang lets Corrin transform. Doing so lets him execute moves that no others can. Some moves transform specific parts of his body.

Corrin’s moves include the Dragon Fang Shot, Dragon Lunge, Dragon Ascent, Counter Surge. Torrential Roar is the Final Smash, allowing him to pull in opponents with a whirl of water and finish them off collectively.

While there is no new stage, those who purchase Corrin will receive two new music pieces in the Wii U game. Ryoma and Xander are coming as new trophies in the 3DS version.

Corrin is targeted for release in February 2016.
