Coming out of the vacuum that was the E3 show-floor, the last thing I expected to hear out of the gaming press was that Nintendo needed to “justify the existence of the Gamepad”. But alas, that is indeed what I heard! Writers weren’t terribly coy with their impression that we’ve yet to see a truly exceptional experience on the Wii U that couldn’t even remotely be done anywhere else, and they– by their count– certainly didn’t see anything like that at E3 this year.

Neglecting experiences like ZombiU or Nintendo Land (which is an understandable and deliberate oversight), they might be right: We haven’t yet seen a game that both uses the Gamepad in a truly creative way and manages to pass the level of critical acclaim that many people are looking for. But here’s my question “why is that what the Gamepad needs?”

The differences between titles in the Mario Kart series are perhaps only noticeable to those with a lengthy history with the franchise. The subtle focus of Mario Kart 7, for instance, feels much different than the marshmallow-y approach taken by Mario Kart Wii, and the slippery controls in Mario Kart 64 mean you need more focus to pull off power-slides than the game’s DS counterpart. It’s a series long-accepted for its rigidity, and the recently announced Mario Kart 8 does not appear to do anything to change up that formula.



Nintendo showed a whole bunch of trailers and content during its E3 2013 Nintendo Direct. I tried making an overview-type of video for the E3 2013 Nintendo Direct presentation that covers the material in the span of about 12 minutes. It was nearly impossible fitting everything into a somewhat short video, but hopefully it wasn’t too bad!
