Pokemon X/Y sales have surpassed four million copies in just two days, Nintendo has announced. That’s a worldwide figure accounting for sales recorded this past Saturday and Sunday in the Americas, Europe, and Japan.

It’s a bit hard to compare X/Y’s sales to previous games since this is the first time a new release has launched worldwide. Still, Nintendo says: “when combining and comparing regional data for previous launches, Pokémon X and Pokémon Y would be the fastest-selling Nintendo 3DS games of all time and are tracking ahead of the last Pokémon RPG titles, Pokémon Black 2 and Pokémon White 2, by more than 70 percent.”

The Pokemon series has now sold over 245 million games worldwide. According to Nintendo, five sets of Pokemon titles have combined to surpass 10 million units sold to date worldwide, with three sets combining to surpass 15 million units.

The list is as follows:

Two special 3DS XL systems have been announced for Europe today, both launching next month.

First up, Nintendo will be selling The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds Limited Edition 3DS XL. It comes with a specially designed system as well as a download code for the 3DS game. The top shell and the inside of the console are dressed with an iconic gold color, while the bottom shell is all black and contains a Triforce logo emblazoned across each side. Open the 3DS XL and you’ll see the double Triforce logo of the game.

In addition to Zelda, Nintendo will be making the Luigi Special Edition 3DS XL available at store.nintendo.co.uk. The main system is white, but Luigi’s prints can be found all over the console with his silhouette covering the shell in two shades of green.

Ubisoft’s Michel Ancel shared a few words about Nintendo while speaking with ONM this month.

According to the Rayman creator, innovation is the company’s greatest strength as well as its greatest weakness. This goes hand in hand with risk-taking, he believes.

Ancel also said that “the biggest surprises seem to come from Nintendo.” Miiverse and the GamePad were both pointed to as examples.

Ancel’s comments in full:

Nintendo’s greatest strength, and its greatest weakness, is innovation. It’s a company that takes a lot of risks. Few people understand that innovation involves risk-taking, because you don’t control everything on the market.

Today, the biggest surprises seem to come from Nintendo. People may like those surprises or not, but that’s a fact. Miiverse was a surprise, the GamePad was a surprise. What will come next? I can’t wait!

Raising Pokemon was one of the areas Game Freak placed great emphasis on while developing Pokemon X/Y.

Director Junichi Masuda, in an interview with Famitsu, explained that players tend to play games less these days. And so raising Pokemon is much easier than before. As an example, experience points can be gained simply by catching another Pokemon.

“While we did integrate a lot of detailed adjustments into the game balance, another part would be the ease of raising Pokémon. Nowadays, we have the Internet, smartphones, and more, so I think the time spent playing games has decreased.”

“For those reasons, we made it much easier to raise your Pokémon that will allow you to play smoother and more comfortably than before. For example, simply catching a Pokémon with a Pokéball will net you some experience points.”
