Dreadlocks has determined a more specific release window for the Wii U version of Dex. In a Kickstarter update, the studio said that the game can be expected on the eShop sometime during Q1 2016.

Dreadlocks spoke very positively about working with Nintendo and the Wii U in general. This version “will feature some unique functionalities”, according to the developer.

Here’s what was shared in the Kickstarter update:

“Both the Wii U and Ouya versions are still very much in development and our target release window is Q1 2016 (possibly Q2 for Ouya). We realize that this is later than first anticipated, and that those of you waiting for these versions to play Dex are getting impatient. The main reason for the delay is that we decided to work of the Enhanced Version of Dex to improve several aspects of the game, based on the feedback we received following the release. The console versions will of course include all those changes (and more), so our development schedule was significantly shifted as a result.

Nintendo has been extremely helpful and delightful to work with, and we’re very excited about the Wii U version, which will feature some unique functionalities, more of which we’ll detail in the coming months.”

Because of the fairly long wait, Kickstarter backers who pledged for the console version will receive a free Steam key so that the game can be played as soon as possible. The console codes will still be distributed next year as well.

Nintendo has filed a new patent involving clickable scroll wheel shoulder buttons. The filing was submitted in February of this year, but was only just published today.

An image included with the patent shows a controller that looks fairly reminiscent of a Wii U GamePad. The device has a touchscreen, but features a smaller design and two instead of four buttons as well as analog sticks rather than Circle Pads. Most significant is the addition of clickable scroll wheels for the left and right shoulder buttons.

Here’s an abstract from Nintendo’s filing:

“An example operation apparatus includes: a direction input operation section provided on a front surface of a housing of the operation apparatus and at such a position that, in a state where the operation apparatus is held with at least one hand of a user, the direction input operation section is allowed to be operated with a thumb of the hand; and a rotation operation section which is provided on a surface different from the front surface of the housing and at such a position that, in a state where the operation apparatus is held with the hand or the other hand of the user, the rotation operation section is allowed to be operated with an index finger of the hand or the other hand and which is an operation section capable of being rotationally operated.”

We’ll have to see if anything comes from this patent. This could just be a harmless filing on Nintendo’s part!
