Jim Carrey comments on Sonic the Hedgehog movie controversy and redesign

After Sonic’s look was shown off for the upcoming movie, fans expressed a very negative opinion. The backlash was so strong that the film was the delayed and the character’s design will be changed.
Jim Carrey, who plays Dr. Ivo Robotnik in the movie, has now commented on the situation. Speaking at the Television Critics Association presentation for Carrey’s Showtime series Kidding, he said:

After a negative reaction to Sonic’s design in the upcoming movie, it was announced that the character would be going through a bit of a makeover. The decision also prompted the film to be delayed into February of next year.
Tim Miller, an executive producer on the Sonic movie, spoke about the entire experience in an interview with Variety. Miller shared the following about the reaction and going through with the redesign:

Sonic Team boss says 2021 is the “next big year” for Sonic

2021 will be the “next big year” for Sonic. That’s according to Sonic Team boss Takashi Iizuka, who teased future plans in an interview with Game Informer.
Regarding 2021 and what it means for the series, Iizuka said:

2021 will be a big year for Sonic, as the character and the franchise as a whole will be turning 30 years old. According to Sonic Team boss Takashi Iizuka, the team wants to take on a new kind of challenge for the the series’ big milestone.
Iizuka shared that news in a recent interview with 4Gamer. During the same discussion, he was also asked about the possibility of Sonic crossing over into eSports territory. Given the nature of the main games, Iizuka believes it’s unlikely. Other genres may be a better fit for the idea, however.

Sonic the Hedgehog movie delayed to February 2020, taking time “to make Sonic just right”

The Sonic the Hedgehog movie will not release towards the end of the year as originally planned. It will now debut on February 14, 2020, director Jeff Fowler has announced.
Fowler said on Twitter that the extra time will be used “to make Sonic just right.” He passed along the following tweet:

Sonic earned widespread acclaim with Sonic Mania, which returns to the series’ roots. Along with being well-received by fans and critics, it also sold well. Around that game’s release, Sonic Team boss Takashi Iizuka believes that the franchise turned a corner.

The first trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog was finally shown this week, and the reaction has not been pretty. Fans have taken issue with the design of Sonic himself. Complaints have noted that he simply looks off and not in line with what’s expected of the character.
The good news is that the team behind the movie has been listening. On Twitter just a short while ago, director Jeff Fowler thanked fans for their support and promises that there will be changes.
