A few hours ago, Square Enix announced the location services-based game Dragon Quest Walk for mobile. While we won’t really be covering it here as it’s not overly Nintendo-related, something interesting was said during the game’s announcement event.
According to series executive producer Yuu Miyake, he along with creator Yuji Horii “are currently making preparations on series developments that will connect to XII” – Dragon Quest XII, in other words. Miyake said:

A bit of new EarthBound 64 footage surfaces from SpaceWorld 1996

Nintendo eventually released a third entry in the Mother series, but not as it was initially intended. While Mother 3 came out for the Game Boy Advance in Japan, the original plan was to make a new game for the N64 called EarthBound 64. Development did not go smoothly, especially with the team having to create the title in 3D, and the project was scrapped.
All of these years later, we have a new – albeit brief – look at EarthBound 64 in action. YouTube channel kukun kun uploaded a video from SpaceWorld 1996 that provides a few seconds of footage. Although it may not be much, it gives fans another idea of what could have been.
Here’s a brief look at the clip (should be embedded at the right spot, but starts at 10:32):

Director reflects on 25 years of Kirby and the future

It was just a few weeks ago that Kirby celebrated its 25th anniversary. Shinya Kumazaki, who has worked on the series since 2003 and as acted as director since 2008, wrote up a special post on HAL Laboratory’s website in honor of the occasion.
Kumazaki mentioned that “it is now possible to maintain a consistent release and support schedule for our games,” which has allowed Kirby to grow. He also spoke about a philosophy of aiming to please fans by working so hard that the team essentially overdoes it. As for the future, Kumazaki said: “While there are fans there wanting to play a new game in the series, I believe we’ll continue to grow alongside our character and take on those fun and more serious new challenges head on.”
Here’s our full translation of Kumazaki’s message:
