Rumors

The Tracking Board is reporting that a new Mega Man film is in the works. Supposedly, the movie is coming from 20th Century Fox and Chernin Entertainment.

You should definitely take this update with a fairly big grain of salt. The Tracking Board doesn’t really name sources, though the site’s report has been gaining traction.

If the latest rumors are to be believed, Shovel Knight will be coming to Super Smash Bros. Wii U/3DS as a DLC character.

Nintendo Life heard the apparent news from “multiple sources within the video game retail sector”. However, Shovel Knight’s inclusion in the games has of course not been confirmed (or denied) at this time.

The announcement about Shovel Knight being added to Super Smash Bros. could be made within the next month or two. Development is said to be going well, and the character – who would be getting its own amiibo – may release sooner rather than later.

Update (8/24): Bumped to the top. Mighty Switch Force! Academy has been announced, and it’s hitting Steam Early Access tomorrow. What does this mean for Nintendo players? Well, WayForward is open to bringing the game to additional platforms – hopefully Wii U and/or 3DS.

Original (8/20): A tweet sent out on WayForward’s Twitter account has started up the rumor mill once again. The message, posted below, suggests that a new Mighty Switch Force! game is on the way.

We’ve seen two Mighty Switch Force! games on Nintendo platforms thus far. It’d certainly be interesting to see what WayForward would have in store for another game.

Update: (8/23): Bumped to the top. Miller has now posted another tweet saying that he has “no idea” if Layton will be in Smash Bros.

Original (8/22): In July, the IMDB page for Super Smash Bros. on Wii U and 3DS was edited to include Christopher Robin Miller. This is the voice actor behind Professor Layton in the English version of the games. A couple of weeks back, a fan asked if the listing was true, which he denied.

Another fan once again asked Miller on Twitter today about being credited on IMDB for playing Professor Layton in Smash Bros. Interestingly, he indicated this time around that he did actually voice lines for the games.

There could be a few things going on here. Perhaps Miller has his wires crossed, and he’s incorrectly thinking that he voiced lines for Professor Layton in Smash Bros. Or maybe he’s joking. Another possibility, while it would be somewhat surprising due to the nature of NDAs, is that Miller let some information slip. What do you guys think?

The amiibo board over on Reddit has received word that GameStop will not be taking pre-orders for a number of figures launching on September 11 in the United States. Supposedly, there are no plans to take reservations for Ganondorf, Zero Suit Samus, Olimar, and 8-Bit Classic Mario. This information comes from a memo distributed “to certain tiers of GameStop management.”

While there won’t be any pre-orders, we’re hearing that a limited amount of each figures will be offered through GameStop’s website. Also, allocation sent to each store will depend on previous amiibo sales.

Here’s what the stock numbers look like for one store (will vary by each location):

Ganondorf ~10
Zero Suit Samus 116904 ~13
Olimar ~12
8-Bit Classic Mario ~10

We may have the next retailer-exclusive amiibo on our hands.

Target has started putting up listings for the next round of Smash Bros. figures, including Dr. Mario. This has sparked speculation that the amiibo will be an exclusive since it hasn’t appeared in inventory systems for other stores.

Of course, any sort of retailer exclusivity for Dr. Mario hasn’t been confirmed at this time. We’ll need to wait for more information before we know how the situation will play out.

Liam Robertson of Unseen64 fame has once again uncovered something interesting. In a video published on Nintendo Life, he reveals that Spanish developer Mercury Steam, who worked on the Castlevania: Lords of Shadow games, started working on a first-person Metroid game for both Wii U and 3DS. Samus was the main character, but you were also able to play as seven other bounty hunters. Supposedly they pitched this prototype to Nintendo but were turned down. The current state of the project is unknown, though Liam believes that they stripped the Metroid IP from the project and instead turned it into a new IP.

Obviously none of this is 100% confirmed, but Liam Robertson has a pretty good track record when it comes to uncovered info about cancelled games.

Update: GalaxyTrail’s official message is below. It doesn’t sound like the developer is committing to a specific date, though the thread title does state August 20.

As luck would have it, a serious bug in the Wii U version of Freedom Planet was found today that causes Wii U consoles to freeze, requiring a hard reset of the system. This bug only occurs in retail versions of the console, so neither Nintendo nor MP2 experienced the issue and we were only made aware of it by members of the press who tried the game over the past couple days.

We cannot allow the game to launch in a state that would potentially cause damage to Wii U consoles or make players think there is something wrong with their console, so we are delaying again until the issue is fixed. No one is more disappointed at this than me, but we have to do what we have to do.

Thank you for your patience and we will continue to update you on the status of our Wii U release.

Freedom Planet was initially scheduled to arrive on the North American Wii U eShop on August 3. Most recently, the title was pushed back to August 13 (this Thursday). Now it’s looking like Freedom Planet is seeing yet another slight delay.

Nintendo is now listing Freedom Planet for release on August 20, which would be next week. Let’s hope that date finally sticks!

Fire Emblem Fates was released in two versions in Japan. In North America, that’s how the games will be sold as well (Birthright and Conquest). But what about Europe?

Amazon UK currently has a notice on its Fire Emblem Fates product page stating that there’s only one version due out throughout Europe. However, the message is only appearing on iOS/Android devices at the moment.

Keep in mind that Nintendo hasn’t made an official announcement regarding its plans for Fire Emblem Fates’ distribution in Europe. We’ll just have to wait and see if there’s any truth to Amazon’s listing.

There has been plenty of talk over the past few days about GameStop’s amiibo pre-order event. This will be taking place on Saturday, and provides consumers with an opportunity to reserve the Retro 3 Pack containing the R.O.B., Mr. Game & Watch, and Duck Hunt figures.

GameStop has now opened an official page for the event. If you need to find a local store, visit this link.
