[Let’s Talk] What’s next for 3D Mario
Posted on 4 years ago by Brian(@NE_Brian) in Let's Talk | 0 comments
Nintendo came out of the gates swinging for Switch’s launch year in 2017. A big part of that was due to a couple of heavy hitters that dropped within just a few months of each other. Not only did Switch have a new 3D Zelda game at launch in Breath of the Wild, but it also received a new 3D Mario thanks to Super Mario Odyssey.
We already know what’s next for Zelda. At least year’s E3, Nintendo announced Breath of the Wild 2, and there’s a good chance of it coming in 2021. Mario, however, is more of a mystery. There’s been plenty of love for 3D Mario on Switch with Super Mario 3D All-Stars and the upcoming Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury. However, the next true step is an unknown quantity.
Could we end up seeing Super Mario Odyssey 2? Or perhaps another sequel like Super Mario Galaxy 3? Nintendo could also be pursuing something entirely brand new. Let us know what you think could be next for 3D Mario and what you’d personally like to see in the comments below.
[Review] Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin
Posted on 4 years ago by Dennis Gagliardotto(@LyonHart_) in Reviews, Switch | 0 comments
System: Switch
Release date: November 10, 2020
Developer: Edelweiss
Publisher: XSEED / Marvelous
Farming simulation has had an interesting history ever since Harvest Moon popularized it way back in the 90s. I was always fascinated by the idea of simulators in general, but it wasn’t until recent years when I started to really feel like the genre started to accommodate more types of players and creativity really started to help drive the genre forward. Games like Dragon Quest Builders, Summer in Mara, and Rune Factory give players much more to do than waking up at 6 AM to check the mail and grab some fresh fish and carrots. These kinds of titled helped players like myself ease into the gameplay while also offering a sense of adventure alongside the more serene moments of farming and relaxation. Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin continues this trend of implementing a new way to play and acquiring the materials you need to build a future in a newfound land. It’s as wholesome as it is adventurous, all while providing an immense amount of fun in a unique experience that delves into the love of rice – one of the world’s biggest commodities – as well as Japanese folklore to further exude a beautiful fantasy setting.
[Interview] Adam Howden talks returning to the role of Shulk for Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition
Posted on 4 years ago by Brian(@NE_Brian) in Interviews, New Nintendo 3DS, Switch, Wii | 0 comments
It’s been six years since we last caught up with Adam Howden, the voice of Shulk. A lot has happened with the Xenoblade series since then – including a new version of the very original Wii game for Switch.
We felt that with Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition having released earlier in the year, now would be a great time to catch up with Howden once again. It’s a particularly good time since Howden contributed to the game in a big way. Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition features a brand new epilogue, Future Connected, focused on Melia and Shulk.
You can read our full interview below. Note that the discussion contains some spoiler-related information pertaining to the series, but we’ve labeled that part at the very end and separated it from the rest of the interview.

[Review] Bakugan: Champions of Vestroia
Posted on 4 years ago by Dennis Gagliardotto(@LyonHart_) in Reviews, Switch | 0 comments
System: Switch
Release date: November 3, 2020
Developer: WayForward
Publisher: Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment
The last time Bakugan saw any sort of video game outside of mobile devices was back in 2011 with Rise of the Resistance on DS. Almost nine years later, to the dot, the series is back with Champions of Vestroia. I don’t think Bakugan ever had that sort of grip or longevity something like Yu-Gi-Oh! or even Beyblade has, but it’s gathered enough of a following to warrant continued support of the property so many years later, especially now with the new Switch game. The anime continues on with Bakugan: Armored Aliance following a sort of “reboot” with Battle Planet prior to that, so Champions of Vestroia just adds to a big push from SEGA Toys and Spin Master for the series to return to the forefront where it once sat as Property of the Year in 2009.

This week on Nintendo Everything Podcast, we’ve got so much to say about the excellent Nintendo Direct, No More Heroes, Cloud gaming on the Switch, Bravely Default II, the Hyrule Warriors demo, and more. This Direct was basically made for Oni Dino. Galen has some theories on Nintendo’s new plans for mid-generation reform with Cloud gaming. Also, that Hyrule Warriors gameplay is surprisingly complex; come for our early impressions. Later on, we answer some listener mail where we talk about video games inspiring or impacting us as an art form.

Sakurai on Minecraft in Smash Bros. Ultimate, making Steve complex, breaking Twitter
Posted on 4 years ago by Oni Dino(@Oni_Dino) in News, Switch | 0 comments
In his 651st column for Famitsu, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate director Masahiro Sakurai discussed the new DLC for Minecraft’s Steve. Sakurai apparently had several challenges with implementing the fighter – despite the popularity of the character, he did not want Steve to be a watered-down addition to the roster. Though he kept it vague, Sakurai also stated the music for Minecraft gave the team quite the headache.

Mad Rat Dead marches to the beat of its own drum. Blending rhythm mechanics with platforming elements, this music-themed action game from Nippon Ichi Software introduces a new take on its genre with fast-paced gameplay and punk flair. Although it may look like a simple cartoonish romp on the surface, playing through its first few levels reveals Mad Rat Dead to be a surprisingly heartfelt experience bolstered by addictive rhythmic gameplay and a strong narrative direction.
