New Punch-Out!! Easter egg found after almost 30 years
Posted on 8 years ago by Brian(@NE_Brian) in General Nintendo, News | 11 Comments
Nintendo originally brought Punch-Out!! to the NES back in 1987, making the game nearly three decades old. Even though it’s been around for ages, new secrets still continue to appear. In 2009 for example, one undiscovered tidbit was shared in an Iwata Asks discussion. Reddit user midwesternhousewives now appears to have come across a new Easter egg.
In the second Piston Honda fight, a visual cue from one of the spectators indicates when the player should throw a punch to knock out their opponent with a single punch. This also works during Bald Bull’s charge attack in his second fight. As soon as the bearded man ducks, that’s when you should go in for your attack.
Players had previously known about being able to take down Honda with a one-punch KO. The new trick here is the visual cue.
Here’s the explanation from midwesternhousewives:

A few days ago, Australian publication Stack put up a new interview with Shigeru Miyamoto. As you would expect, it was focused mainly on Star Fox Zero. He discussed the GamePad integration, shared first word on the game’s Arcade More, and more. Miyamoto also addressed two general topics: revisiting Nintendo franchises and trying to appeal to new/old players.
A number of Miyamoto’s responses can be found after the break. For the full interview, head on over here.

Miitomo earned 1.6 million downloads in its first 4 days in the U.S.
Posted on 8 years ago by Brian(@NE_Brian) in Mobile, News | 10 Comments
GamesBeat is reporting, via data from industry-tracking firm Sensor Tower, that Miitomo was downloaded 1.6 million times in the United States between March 31 and April 3. This figure accounts for both iOS and Android. However, it doesn’t include downloads when Miitomo was at the top of both platform’s charts through much of the past week.
Miitomo has started to dip a bit, but this was to be expected. Sensor Tower has Miitomo at the tenth spot on iOS, for example.
51 percent of Miitomo’s installs came from the United States, which is quite a large gap over other territories. While Great Britan, France, Germany, and Canada were the other top regions, they all represented less than 10 percent of total downloads each.

Zelda Wii U rumors: More talk of Wii U / NX release, play as a male / female, voice acting
Posted on 8 years ago by Brian(@NE_Brian) in Rumors, Switch, Wii U | 544 Comments
Emily Rogers – who most recently revealed that a new Paper Mario was heading to Wii U prior to the announcement of Color Splash – has come forward with a new set of rumors about Zelda Wii U.
Today’s speculation consists of three parts. Rogers further backs up claims that the new Zelda will be on both Wii U and NX. Additionally, the game may allow players to choose between a male or female character, and most characters are voiced – aside from Link.
Here’s the full roundup of Rogers’ tweets:
Rumor #1: Yes, Zelda is coming to both Wii U and NX. I confirmed it with a ton of people. You can choose which one to get. Or get both.
— Emily Rogers (@ArcadeGirl64) April 8, 2016
Rumor #2: I heard from multiple sources that you can choose between a male or female as your playable character in Zelda.
— Emily Rogers (@ArcadeGirl64) April 8, 2016
Rumor #3: There is voice acting for most of the characters…except Link.
— Emily Rogers (@ArcadeGirl64) April 8, 2016
Like with all rumors, these bits should be taken with a grain of salt. It shouldn’t be too much longer until we hear about the new Zelda in an official capacity again, as E3 is coming up quick.

Splatoon – Sheldon’s Picks Vol. 1 weapons, version 2.7.0 coming next week
Posted on 8 years ago by Brian(@NE_Brian) in News, Wii U | 2 Comments
A big update is coming to Splatoon next week. Not only will version 2.7.0 be available, but eight weapons (Sheldon’s Picks Vol. 1) are being added as well.
What we’ll be seeing first is some maintenance on April 12 (April 13 for those in Europe). That’ll happen during the following times:
– 4:50 PM PT – 6 PM PT
– 7:50 PM ET – 9 PM ET
– 12:50 AM in the UK – 2 AM in the UK
– 1:50 AM in Europe – 3 AM in Europe
The Sheldon’s Picks weapons will then be added at the following times:
– 7 PM PT
– 10 PM ET
– 3 AM in the UK
– 4 AM in Europe
Here’s a rundown of four of the weapons featured in Sheldon’s Picks Vol. 1:
Wasabi Splattershot
This beauty is a Splattershot set featuring a few key adjustments by Sheldon. The main weapon is pretty much the same as before, but Splat Bombs amp up its frontline capability. Alternatively, try calling in an Inkstrike to scatter the opposition and give your teammates the advantage. This is just the set for the discerning Inkling looking for something spicy!
Berry Splattershot Pro
Don’t let the tasty paint job fool ya! This remixed Splattershot Pro includes Suction Bombs and Bomb Rush to help punch through the opponent’s defenses, letting you finish things off with the great firing range of the main.
Fresh Squiffer
Fresh Squiffer is a Classic Squiffer retooled to allow a different approach. Pairing Suction Bombs with the Squiffer makes it even easier to get the upper hand in battle, and you can quickly turn the tables on foes with the Kraken! Definitely not a set for squids who are afraid to get their tentacles dirty!
The Permanent Inkbrush
The Permanent Inkbrush is a set remixed by Sheldon to include the high-powered sub of Splat Bombs while retaining the great mobility of earlier models. Recommended for aggressive Inklings with an uncontrollable urge to wreak maximum havoc. Watch out for the Kraken special!
Head past the break for Splatoon’s 2.7.0 patch notes (requires 764 MB).

GoldenEye 007 director found a weakness in the N64, could have caused another delay
Posted on 8 years ago by Brian(@NE_Brian) in General Nintendo, News | 4 Comments
Originally, Nintendo hoped to have the N64 out on the market by Christmas in 1995. The console ended up with a delay though, and wouldn’t be ready until several months later in the following year. Although Nintendo cited a need for more software to be completed, a former Silicon Graphics engineer contended that the extra wait stemmed from issues with the console’s chips.
Ex-Rare staffer and GoldenEye 007 director Martin Hollis was invited to Silicon Graphics before the N64 launched. He actually found a weakness within the hardware, which could have potentially caused another delay had it been addressed.
Hollis told Nintendo Life:
I got to travel to SGI in Mountain View to write test code that would run on some of the few ‘golden chips’ – this is the terminology for the first chips which come off the production line. From the initial run there were very few working chips, and SGI kept them in-house, so a few developers would fly out to use them for a week. I think I might have been the only ‘worker’ from Rare, although Chris Stamper travelled.
I wrote a piece of code which displayed spinning icosahedrons; as many as possible until the framerate dropped below 60Hz. The head of the project at SGI was not too pleased to discover what the performance of the machine was in terms of triangles per second. He asked to see my code in the hope it was inefficient. It wasn’t. He later told me that SGI very nearly did another spin of the hardware to fix the issue, which was with the memory interface.
