Ninjala

When Ninjala lands on Switch this month, it will be mostly be released as a free-to-play game. There will be paid elements, but anyone will be able to download it at no extra cost from the eShop to see what it has to offer.

We recently asked game designer Kazuki Morishita about the approach behind making Ninjala free-to-play. Speaking with Nintendo Everything, Morishita explained:

A new month rolled right on in earlier this week. Now that we’re in June, we want to know what you’ve been playing.

The Indie Live Expo 2020 presentation is about to begin. Today’s presentation kicks off at 4 AM PT / 7 AM ET / 12 PM in the UK / 1 PM in Europe.

Indie Live Expo 2020 is said to feature over 150 indie games, so presumably there’ll be some stuff here for Switch owners. We don’t have the full list of companies involved, though Inti Creates is one notable developer said to be participating.

Switch is about to receive another big game with the arrival of The Outer Worlds. The RPG comes from Obsidian, the studio behind Fallout: New Vegas, South Park: The Stick of Truth, and more.

Ahead of the Switch launch, we caught up with co-director Tim Cain and production director Eric DeMilt. We spoke about the Switch port, including the challenges involved. There’s also talk here for those that have already experienced The Outer Worlds, as Cain spoke about how the project changed since its early development, what it was like making a compact RPG, and more.

The Outer Worlds

The Outer Worlds will make use of optional gyro controls, Obsidian has confirmed to Nintendo Everything.

Production director Eric DeMilt told us that much time was spent on “tuning controls to help with playability on the Switch.” The team “tuned sensitivity, exposed some inputs to users in the settings menu, tweaked and iterated aim assist values and added support for gyro aiming, and sticky targeting.”

Monolith Soft

Monolith Soft celebrated its 20th anniversary last year. When the company started out making Xenosaga, no one could have predicted where they’d be today. Xenoblade has turned into a million-seller IP while Monolith Soft has been heavily involved in some of Nintendo’s top games, including Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

Hirohide Sugiura, co-president of Monolith Soft, spoke about the developer’s origins in last week’s issue of Famitsu. Regarding his motives for starting his own company back in 1999, Sugiura shared (as translated by Oni Dino of Nintendo Everything):

When even Nintendo itself has abandoned the winning formula of classic Paper Mario games, it’s up to indie developers to carry on that beloved legacy. Bug Fables is just such a game. From its combat system to its graphics to its personality, Bug Fables is a cute little RPG that simply oozes Paper Mario. However, it nonetheless carries its own distinct identity. It tells an impactful and emotional story along with a streamlined gameplay flow that all work together to make it a truly distinctive and worthwhile RPG in its own right.

Shantae and the Seven Sirens

It’s crazy to think that it’s been almost twenty years now since the half-genie hero, Shantae, was introduced to the gaming world way back on the Game Boy Color. The debut entry not only laid the foundation of what would become a long-running and incredible platforming franchise, but at the time pushed pixel art to the absolute limits of its associated hardware. The series laid dormant for quite some time before Risky’s Revenge popped back up in 2010, and since then has seen a ton of success with a healthy schedule of releases. Now Shantae is back on an all new adventure that fine-tunes the HD art from Half-Genie Hero, and brings another incredible Metroidvania that sees new and old faces alike joining in to save the day.
